Starting Monday, April 18, 2022, Gordon Construction will begin the initial work of a major overhaul of Congress Square, at the intersection of Congress and High Street.  This work will consist of moving materials on-site and deployment of construction signs, as well as removal of small traffic islands in the intersection.

Project Activity Update for Thursday, April 28, 2022
Portland Department of Public Works, supported by a grant fund from MaineDOT, is overseeing the major overhaul of Congress Square, at the intersection of Congress and High Street.  New curb alignments, brick sidewalk, custom granite pavers, landscaping, street trees, lighting and an entirely new traffic signal system will be provided.  This effort has begun with work at the corner of Free Street and Congress, in front of the Portland Museum of Art.  This is the most complex portion of the work, providing a new alignment of Free Street and making the intersection much more pedestrian-friendly.  This work should be complete in early Summer of 2022, followed by work on the remaining three corners of the intersection.  All work should be completed by June 30, 2023.

All of this work represents Phase A of the project.  Phase B will be a complete overhaul of Congress Square Park, as well as the entry area by the Portland Museum of Art, which will be announced later in 2022.
