City Extends Outdoor Operations

portland news

In order to continue helping local businesses through the pandemic, the Portland City Council approved an extension of the City’s emergency proclamation as well as outdoor dining operations through May 10, 2021. This will allow restaurants and retailers to continue to operate outdoors on private property, public sidewalks, and in parking lanes.

Businesses must reapply to continue outdoor operations so the City is aware of who is continuing to use these spaces, ensure proper barricades are in place, and in order to properly sign an extension for any State liquor licenses. The permit application to continue operating through May 10, 2021 is now available on the City website. Applications are due January 15, 2021.

“We are committed to doing what we can to continue assisting businesses during the pandemic,” said City Manager Jon Jennings. “I’m thankful for the support we’ve received from the Mayor and City Council and the feedback we’ve received from our local business community as we’ve worked to be agile in meeting their needs to help them survive.

The Council’s Housing & Economic Development Committee will meet remotely tonight, January 5, 2021 at 5:30 PM. The agenda includes a discussion of a 2021 Outdoor Dining & Retail Program Proposal and Other City Business Support Pandemic Programs.

One of the requirements of any business interested in continuing to operate in parking lanes is that their area of operations be surrounded by barriers to protect people, furniture, and structures during plowing operations.

As this is an unprecedented program for the City of Portland, staff will continue to evaluate it throughout the season and make changes as needed.
