PORTLAND, Maine -- Jeff Tarling, City of Portland Arborist, reports that this year’s tree – which is scheduled to be delivered to Monument Square this Thursday – was found by coincidence!

“On November 2nd, Portland witnessed a high wind event with the passing of a cold front that we all might remember,” said Tarling. “Forestry crews responded to a down tree and as part of the clean-up later in the week, Forestry Supervisor Lucas Lermond noticed a beautiful Balsam Fir growing really close to a nearby home. This is often a signal that a once small tree has outgrown its space. We left our contact information and, to our surprise and delight, the property owner responded that they would like to donate the tree!”

The 40' Balsam Fir, located at 96 Florida Avenue in Portland, is being donated by Hilary Carr Shorey and James Shorey. The tree will be moved on Thursday morning beginning around 8 AM with the tree leaving   the site around 9 AM. The tree route will be Ray Street to Washington Avenue across Tukey's Bridge to Congress Street to Monument Square.

Special thanks to: Shaw Brothers Construction for donating the large flatbed truck to move the tree; Keeley Crane Service for providing a crane; Portland Parks & Recreation Forestry for transporting, installing,   and lighting the tree; and to Portland Police and Parking Control for their assistance in escorting the tree safely to Monument Square.

Streaming live now: the all-new Monument Square Tree Cam!

In lieu of our traditional tree lighting event, Portland Downtown teamed up with Hood® Eggnog and Portland Public Library to launch something all new this year: a 24/7 live-streaming “tree cam” overlooking  Monument Square. The Tree Cam creates a virtual window so that visitors locally – and across the globe – can enjoy the illuminated tree and its surroundings anytime, anywhere throughout the holiday season.   Whether it’s at home, in the office, or in person – one of downtown’s most spectacular holiday sights will be just a click away!

How to enjoy the Tree Cam:

  • View the live-stream anytime – 24/7 – at: www.portlandmaine.com/tree. The Tree Cam can be viewed on your mobile device, tablet, or desktop computer. Enter full-screen mode by clicking the icon in the bottom right corner of the video frame.
  • Cast the live-stream to your Smart TV for a festive backdrop while you’re wrapping presents or enjoying Hood® Eggnog around the fireplace.
  • Watch the tree delivery & installation in real time! The tree is scheduled to be delivered to Monument Square around 9am on Thursday, November 19th.
  • Please note: While there will not be a countdown to the tree lighting this year, the lights will be illuminated early in the morning on Friday, November 27th. Passersby are welcome to enjoy the tree in person – but please follow local health & safety guidelines: wear a mask, avoid crowds, and maintain social distance.
  • Check in on the tree & its surroundings throughout the season. Monument Square is beautiful after a gentle snowfall!
