New Playground at the Riverton Community Center / Talbot Community School

Riverton Community Center Playground

The newest playground for Portland has just completed its third week of use! The Riverton community and the Talbot Community School have been working with Parks and Recreation and a host of local supporters to build Portland's first inclusive playspace for children and young families. This is an exciting new space for folks with a wide range of abilities to come and enjoy time on swings, bopping out rhythms on the new conga playground drums, and testing out the ranger themed play equipment. It has had a huge amount of use from the community and school already! Maine Recreation and Design worked with Seaside Landscaping and Excavation and City of Portland staff to build a lovely new play space with a Maine Theme.

A new safety surface with bright blues and greens is being demonstrated in this playspace, and the City was able to save a lot of expense with generous help from Public Works Division 1 crew and the division of Water Resources in getting us wonderful granite curbing, steps, and wild boulders to install on the site. Further savings and assistance will come from Eric Newton and the City Horticulture team with October plantings/ November seeding. Another huge help was the Parks Playground Technical Crew, of Bob Weyer, Tater Forest, and Eddie Walsh. This was Eddie’s last playground before his retirement commenced earlier this month. Best wishes Eddie and many thanks to all the players involved to make this wonderful space a reality!
