City to Offer Weekly Overdose Response Trainings & Naloxone

portland news

The City’s Public Health Division recently merged the Substance Use Prevention and Needle Exchange programs to form the Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction Services program. The program, coordinated by Zoe Brokos, will continue to provide a variety of services, including:  youth substance use prevention, overdose prevention education and naloxone distribution, the Mobile Medical Outreach Project, the Portland Needle Exchange Program, as well as outreach, HIV/Hepatitis C testing, and other community education.

Beginning February 5th at 4:30 PM, with support from the Maine Center for Disease Control, the Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction Services team will be offering free overdose recognition and response training and naloxone (commonly known as Narcan) distribution. This weekly series will take place at the India Street Public Health Center, located at 103 India Street in Portland. Each training is free and open to the public.

This training opportunity is designed to be low-barrier and educational, for community members interested in learning the risk factors for an opioid overdose, how to recognize an overdose, and how to appropriately respond by calling 911 and administering naloxone.

The Public Health Division is committed to reducing the number of people who died of accidental opioid overdoses in Maine in 2018 (354). Carrying naloxone and learning the skills to appropriately respond to a possible opioid overdose is a simple and effective way to help keep the community safe.
