[ARCHIVED] Diamond Street Tide Gate Update

The Department of Public Works would like to update you on the status and activities regarding the above referenced project. This project will separate the existing combined sewer at the intersection of Diamond Street and Marginal Way to a separate sanitary sewer and stormwater drain. We will also be installing a new tidal back flow prevention device on the storm drain adjacent to the U-Haul facility.

There is a great deal of work planned for your area and I will use letters (either mail delivered or hand delivered onto your front doors) to keep you informed.

The contract has been awarded to R.E.Coleman, Inc. of Portland, Maine.

This project is being undertaken to help the City with their efforts to prevent combined sewer overflows into Back Cove. The sewage will be directed to the East End Treatment Plant while the storm water will be discharged into Back Cove. The new tidal back flow prevention device will assist the city in their efforts to prevent tidal flooding in the Bayside neighborhood.

The project calls for a combination of new sanitary sewer, new storm drain, new catch basins, new vault structures, the tidal backflow prevention device, and replacement of any disturbed pavement.

Paint indicating underground utilities is being applied to the streets. The contractor will be completing a layout of scheduled manholes and catch basins for portions of the project. In doing so you may find wooden stakes in your property. Please do not remove them as these are used to indicate the location of underground utilities and new structures in the street.

Portions of the road where the contractor is working will be posted as “No Parking” as necessary when construction activities warrant it. This is done to protect your vehicles and to make moving around the site safer for the contractor as there will be a lot of construction activity. Any street closures will be communicated prior to initiating.

The contractor will begin work each morning at 7:00 AM and typically works until 5:00 PM. Extenuating circumstances or emergencies may require alterations to that schedule as we will be working with the tides.

The contractor will be stockpiling necessary materials for the project within the street right-of-way.

You will have access to driveways on a daily basis but may have to work around work zones to get to them. You will begin to see traffic control devices in the form of variable message boards and physical signs. We ask that you observe and respect the flaggers and any traffic directional changes as we progress.

Trash and recycling pickup for all streets will remain the same on Wednesdays. Please make sure both trash and recycling are at your curb by 6:00 AM.

The project will begin next week at the intersection of Diamond Street and Marginal Way.

Mr. Craig Sloan of Public Works will be serving as the City’s Inspector and will be onsite daily. I apologize in advance for any inconveniences that this construction may cause and thank you for your patience during this period. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact myself (Brad Roland) at 874-8840 or catch Craig onsite during the day.
