Police Participate in May 11 Gun Give Back Program

NEWS ALERT

The Portland Police Department is excited to participate in a gun give back program on May 11, 2019. The event offers an opportunity for the community to become a safer place by offering people a way to safely dispose of unwanted firearms and ammunition.

“Many households in Maine have old, unwanted guns and ammunition tucked away, ignored, and forgotten,” said Interim Chief Vern Malloch. “They are in dresser drawers, shoe boxes, basements, and attics. Part of the reason we hang onto them is because folks simply don’t know what to do with them. These unwanted guns offer a unique challenge when it comes to disposal. There really is no safe way to throw away a gun.”

While there are disposal programs offered for old tires, fluorescent light bulbs, and paint cans, there had been nothing for old and unwanted guns. Similarly, the Portland Police Department  joined many other departments in Maine with a prescription medication collection event over the weekend. This gun give back program is very similar. Police urge people to consider dropping off that old gun that has not been used in years and probably never will be again. Safe disposal ensures that it will not accidentally fall into the hands of a child, be stolen, used in the commission of a crime, or even worse, potentially kill someone.

Chief Malloch added, “we know that old and unneeded prescription drugs can ruin lives and potentially kill. Old and unneeded guns are exactly the same.”

The Gun Give Back event will be held in Portland at Police Headquarters at 109 Middle Street for the collection of old guns and ammo on May 11 from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Police will ensure they are safely disposed of, and people can remain anonymous if they’d like.

If you cannot make it on May 11, Police will gladly collect guns anytime. Simply call the department’s non-emergency number at 207-874-8575 and say you would like to turn over an unwanted gun. Police will arrange to pick it up.
