City Helps Sponsor Mobile Food Pantries for Federal Workers

portland news

The City of Portland is teaming up with Wayside Food Programs to offer two mobile food pantries for any federal workers affected by the government shutdown. Federal workers do not need to live in Portland to participate, but must bring their federal ID. The mobile food pantries will be available on Monday, January 28, 2019 from 3:00 - 4:00 PM at City Hall in Room 24 and on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Portland International Jetport.

The City will also be collecting food and toiletry donations at several City-owned facilities in which the public can donate items to be offered at the mobile pantries. The City is encouraging items such as diapers, baby formula and toiletries as those items will not be provided by Wayside. Collection sites are available in the City Hall Rotunda (1st floor), at the City’s Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department at 212 Canco Road, at the Spring Street Garage, 45 Spring Street, and at the Portland International Jetport’s Administration Offices, 1001 Westbrook Street.

In addition to this, since federal workers are being encouraged to apply for SNAP benefits, the Public Health Department’s SNAP-Ed program will offer 60-minute Pop-Up grocery store tours that are free of cost for participants. This is a portable version of the traditional Cooking Matters at the Store tour. Participants who complete the Pop-Up tour receive a $10 Hannaford gift card, reusable shopping bag and recipe booklet. There will also be information on hand on how participants can apply for SNAP benefits. Classes will be held at on Monday, January 28th, 2019 from 4-5 PM in Room 24 of City Hall and on Wednesday, January 30th, 2019 from 10-11 AM at the Portland International Jetport.
