Jennings Selects Mona Bector as New Assistant City Manager

NEWS ALERT

City Manager Jon Jennings is pleased to announce that he has selected Mona Bector to serve as the new Assistant City Manager. She will start Tuesday, May 29. The City conducted a search process for an Assistant City Manager to replace current Deputy City Manager Anita LaChance who is retiring in August after 38 years of service with the City.

Ms. Bector has more than 12 years of experience as a senior executive in the public sector. She has also managed multiple change initiatives within the private and the public sector as a senior change management leader.

She most recently ran her own consulting firm in the Greater Boston area, focusing on organizational development and change management. Prior to that, she served as a Deputy Commissioner for the State of New York and for the City of New York under Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration for 10 years in multiple executive roles. She was an Assistant Commissioner of Operations in the Department of Consumer Affairs, Associate Commissioner with the Administration of Children Services, and Deputy CEO for the NYC Department of Education. Before her public service career, Ms. Bector was a manager with KPMG Consulting; she helped set up the telecom strategy consulting practice and managed major telecom projects in domestic and international markets. She has also worked with BellCore (Bell Labs, now a part of Ericsson) and with Coopers & Lybrand on telecom strategy and systems.

"I’m delighted that we were able to recruit someone like Mona with her breadth of public and private sector experience and her passion for change management through the use of innovation and technology,” said City Manager Jon Jennings. “We have made a number of great strides in making municipal government more efficient and effective and I think Mona will be a great addition to our leadership team.”

”I am excited to be a part of Portland’s growth and its ascent as a vibrant center of innovation, growth and opportunity! I also envision the City as a pioneer in achieving the right balance between growth and quality of life,” stated Ms. Bector. “I consider my role to be one that facilitates and empowers the great team of City leaders.”

Ms. Bector has an MBA in International Business from Nyenrode University in the Netherlands and a BA in Education from City College, City University of New York. She has additional qualifications in Electrical Engineering and is a certified project manager and change manager.
