City of Portland Bulky Item Collection

The process for Bulky Items changed as of April 2018. 
For those who wish to participate, the Department of Public Work’s bulky item collection program provides a convenient way to dispose of many items. Everyone who lives in a home, apartment building or condominium that receives weekly service from Portland’s trash and recycling crews is eligible to participate. Items that weigh 30 lbs. or less and do not fit in a city trash bag, will be collected free of charge (limit 10 items per dwelling unit per year) while items that weigh more than 30 lbs. will be collected subject to a $40 fee per item.

HOW TO REQUEST BULKY ITEM PICKUP USING OUR NEW CITIZEN SELF SERVICE PORTAL

  1. Create a log in on the Citizen Self Service Portal.
  2. Put together a list of the bulky items you wish to get rid of including approximate measurements of size, height & weight. 
  3. Log into your account on the CITIZEN SELF SERVICE portal. 
  4. Click the "APPLY TAB" which creates a drop down menu titled: Permits.
  5. At the bottom of the Permits list click:   >All (40)
  6. Find the Public Works: Solid Waste-Bulky Item Pickup application under permits --third permit down on the list.
  7. Follow the permit application making sure to enter all required information, upload photos if you can. The Mobile App makes uploading photos easy as an actual step in the process. 
  8. If requesting collection of large items (over 30lbs), you will be invoiced via email.  Payment should be made online and paid in full is required before a date is assigned. 
  9. Final Step, you will receive an email confirmation that includes a set-out date for pickup by the crew on a normal trash day.  **** DO NOT put items out before receiving this confirmation email because the items will not be picked up.****

SMALL BULKY ITEMS  10 Free per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30)

SMALL BULKY ITEMS that qualifying for FREE curbside collection may include items as pictured below.  To qualify as a FREE SMALL Bulky Items must be:

  1. Too large to fit in a City of Portland 30 gallon trash bag
  2. Weigh less than 30 pounds
  3. Item can be safely lifted and carried curbside by one individual

LARGE BULKY ITEMS $40 fee per eligible item

LARGE BULKY ITEMS are subject to a $40.00 disposal fee for curbside collection. Qualified large items include items weighing over 30 pounds and must be approved prior to collection.  Items that qualify as LARGE $40.00 Items must:

  1. Be one single item (bound together if broken)
  2. Be wrapped in plastic prior to placing curbside if ANY type of infestation is suspected due to health risks. 

Hazardous Household Waste (air conditioners, dehumidifiers, refrigerator, freezer) Electronic Waste, Universal Waste, household garbage, yard waste and remodeling etc. is NOT included

Electronics & Special Waste

From time to time, residents have a need to get rid of common household items that do not fit in a City of Portland trash bags. If such items are still in usable condition, we encourage residents to donate them to charitable organizations or to make them available to other people who may have a use for them. Prices vary on the level of service desired and the types of materials to be collected. Residents are welcome to contact these service providers for more information.
