In January, 2010, the City Council established the Solid Waste Task Force to develop a five year plan to implement the policies and programs necessary to achieve the State of Maine's 50% recycling goal, including a cost analysis and a time line for achieving this goal. As part of its mission, the task force will review existing policies and programs, inventory existing public waste receptacles, seek input from stakeholders and members of the public and develop policies and programs that will facilitate the achievement of the State's goals. This could include increased business and consumer responsibility and diverting material from the waste stream through increased recycling, composting and other means.
Members of the task force include representatives from ecomaine, waste haulers, environmental advocates, multi-family property owners or managers, commercial property owners or managers and Portland residents.
