The Recreation Division offers a vast array of recreation programs and clinics for preschool, youth, family, teens, adults and senior adults at its five community centers.

Before and afterschool programs are offered at 7 elementary schools. This is an extension of the school day with activities including indoor and outdoor games, arts and crafts activities, outdoor adventure with Maine Audubon and opportunities for children to have a big brother or big sister through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. With a generous grant from Hannaford Supermarket, we are able to provide a healthy snack for every child that helps power them up during the busy afterschool. The Portland Public Library provides books on a rotating basis to each site and works with Recreation and the Portland Seadogs to challenge kids to “Read Your Way to Opening Day”.

Portland Recreation has an extensive senior adult program for ages 55+. Up to three vans provide door to door service to local programs and activities. Recreation staff mail calendars and registration forms each month; don’t miss out! Call Recreation office at 756-8275 to get on the mailing list.

Riverton and Reiche pools, and outdoor Kiwanis Pool offer swim lessons for children and adults, adult aerobics, open swim and rental opportunities. The Riverton and Reiche pools are also home to the Portland middle and high school swim teams as well as the Portland Porpoise Swim Club.

Special events, the 4th of July fireworks, WinteRush and concerts in the parks are part of the fabric of Recreation. From our children’s concert series to our Sunset Folk Series we offer a wide variety of music for all ages.

Athletic Facilities has over 50 playing fields, including 2 artificial surfaces at Fitzpatrick and Memorial Stadiums. Lighted softball and baseball fields are used by local leagues. Tennis, volleyball and basketball courts are also available for public use.

The Portland Ice Arena offers skating lessons for children and adults, public skating, ice time and clinics.

Recreation offers opportunities for healthy lifestyles. Enjoy our “Concerts in the Parks”, walk along the trails throughout the city, play tennis at Deering High School, Eastern Prom and Deering Oaks. Take time to enjoy Payson Park, Deering Oaks, Baxter Boulevard, Eastern Prom and Western Prom and all of our neighborhood parks, and playgrounds. Stroll along Eastern Prom and grab breath-taking views of Casco Bay.
