There are 16 cemeteries maintained throughout the City of Portland; the majority of them not having had a burial in years. The cemeteries are maintained by a crew of five full-time employees supplemented by seasonal help in the spring. Two cemeteries, Evergreen and Forest City, remain active with an average yearly total of 300 burials.

Evergreen Cemetery located at 672 Stevens Ave was founded in 1854 with 55 acres for burial space. It has since grown to 239 acres with 110 acres used for burial space and an estimated total of over 70,000 burials. Evergreen Cemetery is the 2nd largest cemetery on the east coast in regards to acreage.

Forest City Cemetery can be found on Lincoln St in South Portland. Established in 1858, Forest City consists of 97 acres with an estimated total of over 30,000 burials.
