Property owners wishing to request approval for work must submit an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness to the Planning Department. The application should include a detailed description of the project, photographs of the property, plans and elevation drawings, and product specifications. Many minor alterations may be reviewed and approved by staff in short order. More significant alterations are reviewed by the city’s Historic Preservation Board, which meets twice a month and is made up of Portland residents with expertise in historic buildings and construction. Both staff and Committee members are ready to assist you in identifying practical and affordable solutions that meet both your needs and the ordinance’s standards.
