Case Management

The Children’s Oral Health Program in Portland is a comprehensive program which offers health education and preventive dental services to Portland residents, with particular focus on meeting the needs of underserved children. A primary goal of this program is to ensure that everyone has access to care and is established in a “dental home”.

Screenings

Dental screenings aim to identify children who need dental care in grades K and 3 in public and parochial schools in Portland. Children are referred to a dentist if they need orthodontic care, or if they are identified as having dental decay, an abscess, and/or pain.

Education

The education component provides practical information to promote healthy behaviors.  The health educators present a comprehensive curriculum which includes oral health, tobacco, and nutrition to all elementary school children. The dental screening and education programs receive funding from the Maine CDC.

Sealants

Dental sealants, thin plastic coatings applied to prevent tooth decay, are offered free of charge to second graders and middle school students in qualifying schools. A qualifying school must meet certain criteria established by the Maine CDC, which provides funding for the sealant program. This program also receives funding from Oral Health America.

Preventative Dental Services For Children

The school based clinic program offers preventive dental treatment, including cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants at the School Based Health Centers (SBDC) in Portland Public Schools. There are seven SBDC’s located at Reiche, Riverton, West, King, Deering, and Portland High, Casco Bay High School. The School Based Dental Clinic received funding from the Maine Health Access Foundation. If you would like to make an appointment for your child please call 541-6631.

Case management services are provided for any child 0-18 with dental needs. If you need help finding a dentist, please call 541-6627.

Case Management

Case management services are offered to any child with unmet dental needs who is unable to find a dentist. The case manager works with families to overcome language barriers, transportation issues, and any other issues that may prevent access to dental care. This program is funded, in part, by the Maine CDC.
