Fire Department Board of Merit Awards Held November 7th (11/12/2009)
The Portland Fire Department Board of Merit held its 2009 awards ceremony on Saturday, November 7th, in the Portland High School auditorium. Lieutenant Edward Dexter was Master of Ceremonies. Fire Chief Frederick LaMontagne distributed several individual and company awards. They are as follows.

Notice to Firefighter Candidates (5/19/2009)
The City had tentatively scheduled an entry-level exam for Firefighter to be held in summer 2009. This exam has now been postposed to the fall. Please continue to monitor the Fire Department's web page or the City's job page for updates. No application packets will be distributed or accepted until the recruitment process has begun.

Fire Safety Tips for Year Round Boat Living (10/27/2008)
The Portland Fire Department offers these safety tips to year-round residents living on winterized boats on the waterfront.
According to The National Fire Protection Agency statistics, a residential fire starts every ten seconds in the United States. Every sixth fire is large enough to require fire department assistance. BOATS ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM THESE STATISTICS.

Portland Fire Department Reminds Residents that Fire Hydrants Cannot Be Painted (5/27/2008)
In response to a growing number of fire hydrants discovered to have been painted without authorization, the Portland Fire Department reminds the community that painting their neighborhood fire hydrant is forbidden without permission from the Portland Water District.

STRENGTHENING A REMARKABLE CITY
Portland is a small city of about 30 square
miles, set on a peninsula overlooking Casco Bay, with a nighttime population of
about 68,000 that swells to over 150,000 during the day. The PFD protects a
diverse community that contains a major Seaport, an International Jetport, large
industrial companies, a large area of residential multi unit dwellings that
consist of numerous tightly packed three to five story apartment houses, and 2
major highways.
Portland currently staffs the apparatus as follows:
- Engines 1,4,5,6,7
(Fireboat), Ladder 4 (Quint), and Engine 11 with 3 firefighter crews
- Engine 9 with a 3
