Yes, if your business is located within a local historic district, any exterior or site alteration must be reviewed and approved by the Historic Preservation Office prior to undertaking the work. Examples of alterations requiring historic preservation approval include alterations to the building entry; installation of signs, awnings and/or exterior lighting; outdoor dining installations, the introduction of exterior vents, ductwork and/or other mechanical equipment. When you submit your sign or building permit application, it will automatically be forwarded to historic preservation staff for review and approval. In some cases, work that would otherwise meet fire and/or or building code requirements may not meet historic preservation review standards. Historic Preservation staff will work closely with the applicant, the contractor or design professional, state and local fire safety regulators and Inspections staff to find a solution that meets all applicable requirements.
