2020 Maine Bicentennial

  1. Holding Up the Sky: Wabanaki People, Culture, History & Art Exhibition

    April 12, 2019 - February 1, 2020 @ Maine Historical Society

Holding up the Sky explores Wabanaki philosophies of leadership and obligation relating to humans and non-humans by highlighting 13,000 years of Wabanaki residence in what is now known as Maine. Wabanaki advisors guided the exhibition, interpreting 17th century colonial treaties, photographs, heritage items, and contemporary artworks—everything from ash baskets to haute couture fashion. Wabanaki voices provide context for the present-day relevance and repercussions of 400 years of shared histories between Wabanaki people and immigrants to their region.

  1. Traffic Change at corner of Clifton/Vannah/Woodford Meeting

June 11, 2019, 6:30 PM @ Ocean Ave. Elementary School Cafeteria

Please join Portland Parks, Recreation & Facilities, Public Works, Friends of Woodfords Corner, and Back Cove Neighborhood Association for a public meeting to discuss this project to redirect the flow of traffic at the intersection of Vannah, Woodford, and Clifton Streets. Neighborhood groups and City staff have been concerned with traffic issues and accidents at this busy corner that is confusing to many motorists. The City will be testing some traffic changes at the intersection using signage and re-purposed granite planters. If the changes are successful, the city will consider making them permanent. The change will consist of closing off the slip lane that currently runs through Baxter Sundial Park. This will have the effect of creating a 4 way stop at the corner of Clifton and Vannah. The proposed traffic change will have the benefit of expanding the size of Baxter Sundial Park, and we are looking forward to activating that space with seating options and greenery.
