City's Forestry Crew Works to Remove Invasive Trees on Western Prom

portland news

The City’s Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department has been working on invasive tree removal improvements on the Western Promenade as outlined in the recent Western Prom Master Plan. Currently, City Forestry crews have two work areas, the southern viewshed across from the Western Cemetery and the Valley Street playground, community garden and dog park edges, technically part of the Western Promenade. Clearing on the southern view area includes opening up historic views of the Fore River that have been obscured by invasive Norway Maple for decades.

Following Master Plan guidelines and recommendations to reduce Norway Maple populations as a standard when possible, the clearing on the southern Western Promenade is 100% Norway Maple removal leaving native Red Oak and Black Cherry. Work on Valley Street will improve the woodland edge, giving more clearance for the future play space and community garden. The work is expected to take one week.

Follow-up improvements will take place as conditions allow including the planting of new native trees and landscaping. The early winter is an excellent time to conduct this work. Slope stabilization is not an issue as all the stumps are still in place. Parks will simultaneously pursue strategic stump removal and native replanting in spring and summer 2021. In addition, Public Works is focused on stormwater and erosion control with a rain garden project slated for bid in spring 2021.
