Sewer Rehabilitation - Elm Street - Temporary Lane Closure

construction work

The City of Portland is utilizing trenchless technology to rehabilitate the sewer system in Elm Street. The existing sewer is made of vitrified clay pipe and was installed in 1926. It has several cracks, chips, and leaks that allow for extra water to enter the sewer. By rehabilitating the sewer, a new structurally sound pipe will be installed without digging into the street. While the rehabilitation process occurs, one lane of Elm Street will be closed to traffic.

For the most part, the work will be completed overnight between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. limiting any traffic impact. Some work will be completed during the day or starting at 6 p.m. based on predicted weather but every effort will be made to limit traffic impacts. At no point will both lanes of Elm Street be closed. All Metro buses will be able to continue on their routes without impact. Some street parking will be closed temporarily while the work is done and no parking signs will be posted where necessary.

We appreciate your patience while this work occurs between November 6 and December 6. It is anticipated to be completed prior to December 6 but the weather can impact when and where work can be completed.

For more information or questions regarding this work, please contact Benjamin Pearson, Compliance Section Coordinator, Water Resources Division, Department of Public Works, at 874-8843 or bnp@portlandmaine.gov.
