Portland Disability Advisory Committee Creates PSAs and Co-Hosts Speaker Series

portland news

Members of the Portland Disability Advisory Committee (PDAC) recently created three public service announcements (PSAs) that share their personal insights about living with a disability and challenge many misconceptions about individuals with disabilities. Tom Handel, Executive Director of Portland Media Center, generously created these powerful PSAs, during which the members answer the following important questions:

  • What one word captures what "disability" means to you?
  • How can having a disability be an asset, not a deficit?
  • What one misconception about individuals with disabilities would you like to clarify?

The PSAs can be viewed at here.

And on March 21st, PDAC and the Age-Friendly Portland Steering Committee are kicking off their speaker series, Information is Power: A Dialogue on Disability and Aging.  Please join us for monthly presentations by notable speakers, free and open to the public, on topics of importance to the disabled, the elderly, their caregivers, and anyone interested in attending. Light snacks and refreshments provided. Please email Mandy at to register for any and all of the 4 presentations. Any questions?  Please call 541-6620.

Free validated parking provided in any available spots in the Elm Street parking lot next to the Portland Public Library: please bring your ticket to the event to be validated.

For more information about the presentations, please see below or the flyer located on the PDAC page.

PDAC advises Portland's City Manager on issues of importance to people with disabilities, and recommends, policies and practices in matters affecting people with disabilities consistent with the Americans With Disabilies Act (ADA).  Committee membership includes a diverse array of individuals, including individuals with disabilities, business owners, family members, and representatives of organizations that advocate on behalf of the disabled, all of whom share a commitment to help create quality lives for individuals with disabilities in the City of Portland.
