Portland Girls Basketball Teams Kick Off 4-Game Tournament with Team from Japanese Sister-City

On August 9th, opening ceremonies for the Portland portion of the sister-city sports exchange with Shinagawa, Japan will take place at 10 AM at the Portland Expo with 13-15 year old girls from the Portland travel team, the YES summer league team, and a team from Shinagawa. Game 1, which will follow the opening ceremonies, is between the Shinagawa team and the Portland travel team. There will be four games in total, and all three teams will be introduced during the opening ceremonies.

Games 2 (August 10) and 3 (August 13) will feature the Shinagawa team versus the YES team. The final game (August 14) will be a rematch between the Shinagawa team and the Portland travel team. All games start at 10 AM at the Portland Expo, and will be played on the Maine Red Claws floor. All games are free and open to the public, so people are encouraged to come and watch!

The Portland-Shinagawa Sister-City exchange program is in its 34th year. Since 1984, this relationship between the two cities has seen hundreds of Mainers participate in sports, cultural, and teacher exchanges, along with reciprocal visits to Shinagawa and Portland.

On July 22, 11 basketball players, ages 13-15, along with their coaches, departed for an 11-day visit to Shinagawa, where they played four basketball games against the host Shinagawa team, along with other Shinagawa area teams.
