Pesticide Use Ordinance effective

The new City of Portland Pesticide Ordinance prohibits the use of synthetic pesticides for outdoor pest management on public and private property within the City of Portland. It provides limited exceptions that allow the use of otherwise prohibited pesticides in emergency situations and when an imminent threat to the health and welfare of the public exists. In other circumstances, it creates a process where persons who wish to apply a prohibited pesticide may apply for a waiver from a committee established to hear such requests. The committee may grant a waiver only if the request meets specific criteria.

The City itself is subject to the ordinance regulations first, on July 1, 2018, except for high-use athletic fields and golf course.  Next, on January 1, 2019, private property pest management is regulated by the new provisions -- again with the exception of high-use athletic fields and golf courses.  That exception for both public and private property ends January 1, 2021.
