Absentee Voting Begins October 10

The City Clerk’s office will begin conducting absentee voting by mail, phone or in person on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. People wishing to vote in person can do so at City Hall in the State of Maine Room on the 2nd floor. Hours are 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday for any resident wishing to register to vote or vote by absentee. Residents can also request an absentee ballot be mailed to them. Election Day this year is November 7, 2017, and all polling places are open 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM. 


2017 Municipal Ballot Info

This year, there are two Citizen Initiative Referendum questions and two City-sponsored Referendum bond questions on the municipal ballot. 

 

Question 1 

“Do you favor the change in the City Ordinance(s) proposed by citizen petition as provided below?” “Amendment to the Portland City Code:  Chapter 6:  Buildings and Building Regulations Re: Rent Stabilization and Protection of Tenants’ Rights.” Yes/No

Question 2

“Do you favor the change in the City Ordinance(s) proposed by citizen petition as provided below?” “Chapter 14, Subsection 58 An Amendment to strengthen zoning protection by allowing resident participation in proposed zoning changes.” Yes/No

Question 3

Shall the Order entitled “ORDER APPROVING LONGFELLOW, LYSETH, PRESUMPSCOT AND REICHE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RENOVATION PROJECTS WITH TOTAL PROJECT COSTS NOT TO EXCEED $64,260,136 AND AUTHORIZING GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS THEREFORE, SUBJECT TO THE CONDITIONS CONTAINED IN THIS ORDER”, with provisions for early redemption as set forth in said Order be approved? Yes/No

Question 4 

Shall the Order entitled “ORDER APPROVING LYSETH AND PRESUMPSCOT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RENOVATION PROJECTS WITH TOTAL PROJECT COSTS NOT TO EXCEED $31,626,000 AND AUTHORIZING GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS THEREFORE, SUBJECT TO THE CONDITIONS CONTAINED IN THIS ORDER”, with provisions for early redemption as set forth in said Order be Approved? Yes/No

Important Note Regarding Questions 3 and 4 -- Only one question can win. If both questions receive more yes votes than no votes, then the question with the most yes votes will be the ultimate winner. A Financial Statement related to the two bond questions is included with the sample ballot and will be posted at all polling locations. 

 

Important Voting Information

Residents may also call the City Clerk’s office to request an absentee ballot mailed to them or one can be requested online.  

 

On Thursday, November 2, 2017 only, the Clerk’s Office will remain open until 7:00 PM for the final day to request an absentee ballot and for in-person absentee voting at City Hall. 

 

Same day voter registration is allowed at polling places on Election Day. Citizens must provide proof of identity and residency.
