Temporary Closure of Fort Gorges Interior for Construction Work

fort gorges

Fort Gorges will be temporarily closed for construction from September 18th, 2017 through early October 2017. As part of a project funded by the Army Corps of Engineers, safety and access improvements are being made to the fort so that the public can continue to safely enjoy this historical treasure in the heart of Casco Bay.

Throughout the fort, gates and railings are being installed to improve safety conditions. While every effort has been made to leave the fort open during construction, the installation of the main entrance (or sally port) gates will require the temporary closure of the interior facility. During construction, there have been several acts of vandalism that have caused damage to this historic fort, so it has been determined that the fort will remain closed for the duration of the project once the main sally port gate is installed.

Visitors will still be free to land on Hog Island Ledge and explore the beaches and exterior of the fort at their own risk, but the interior of the fort will be inaccessible during this time. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to ensure the long term stability and public safety at Fort Gorges.
