City Installs Sound Monitoring Devices to Collect Noise Impact Data

Sound Monitoring Location Map

The City of Portland has successfully deployed 13 sound monitoring devices across the city to collect noise impact data. The devices, which cost $50,000, were installed by Acentech and will collect data for three months. While the impetus for collecting this data derived from noise in the Old Port and concerts, the devices will allow the City to get a baseline for all daily activities that produce noise. This effort was identified as a priority in the FY18 budget.

At the end of the three months, the City will receive a baseline report from Acentech. City staff will review that report and then bring it before the Council’s Health & Human Services Committee for review and discussion on next steps.

The following is a list of where the devices are located:

  1. POT (Ferry Terminal) at Maine State Pier
  2. Wharf Street and Dana Street
  3. Union Street and Fore Street
  4. Brown Street and Free Street
  5. Congress Street and High Street
  6. Thompson Point (Brick South Building)
  7. Mountfort Street and Congress Street
  8. Forest Street and Allen Avenue
  9. Stevens Avenue and Brighton Avenue
  10. Casco Bay Bridge access ramp / Commercial Street
  11. Presumpscot Street and Washington Avenue
  12. Allen Avenue and Washington Avenue
  13. Peaks Island Ferry Dock
