State Street One Lane Only Starting Tuesday, August 22

traffic alert

Beginning Tuesday, August 22, 2017, the City’s State Street Infrastructure Project will enter State Street inbound of Park Avenue through Cumberland Avenue. This work is part of the City's effort to reduce Combined Sewer Overflows into Back Cove. The work includes the installation of a new storm drain and the replacement of the existing sanitary sewer. Portland Water District and Unitil Natural Gas will also be replacing their mains within the street. Once the utility work is complete, the roadway will be reconstructed with new pavement.

IMPORTANT INFO FOR MOTORISTS:  State Street will be down to one lane only from Park Avenue to Cumberland Avenue starting Tuesday, August 22 for the remainder of the week. The contractor will be working within this zone between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

IMPORTANT INFO FOR RESIDENTS:  The contractor will be closing Grant and Sherman St to local traffic only, and will have flaggers at each of the streets.

I-295 motorists seeking to use State Street (route 77) as a throughway to South Portland are urged to use exit 5A (southbound) and exit 5 (northbound) to the Casco Bay Bridge via the Fore River Parkway and West Commercial Street to avoid in-town traffic congestion.

Motorists are urged, if possible, to seek alternate routes into and around the city during construction.

As a heads up, the next phase of this work will include the complete closure - both lanes - of State Street from Park Ave to Cumberland Ave for three months. The City will announce this phase of the work once a start date has been determined.
