State Street & Preble Street Extensions Closed for Night Work Starting July 23

Under Construction

State Street Extension and Preble Street Extension will be closed for night work beginning Sunday, July 23. The roads will be closed from Sunday-Thursday nights from 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM as part of the State Street Infrastructure Project

State Street Extension Work

The City’s contractor, Sargent Corporation, will begin the installation of new sewer and storm drain lines on State Street Extension starting at the Deering Oaks parking lot and heading inbound towards Park Avenue. Due to this work, State Street Extension (Forest Ave to Park Ave) will be closed Sunday - Thursday nights from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM for approximately two months while construction is ongoing.

The contractor is required to have two lanes of traffic open for thru traffic by 7:00 AM each morning.

Motorists heading into town should use Forest Avenue as a detour to Park Avenue. State Street from Park Avenue to Congress Street will remain open at this time.

Motorists utilizing State Street Route 77 towards South Portland are encouraged to use the Fore River Parkway (I-295 exit 5B) and West Commercial Street to access the Casco Bay Bridge and bypass the in-town construction zones.

Preble Street Extension Work

Sargent Corporation will begin the installation of a new storm drain pipe in Preble Street Extension starting from the Back Cove park fields and heading towards Marginal Way under the I-295 Overpass. Due to this work, Preble Street Extension underneath the I-295 overpass will be closed Sunday-Thursday nights from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM for approximately two weeks.

The contractor will be required to have two lanes of traffic open for thru traffic by 7:00 AM each morning.

Motorists are encouraged to use Forest Avenue as a detour around the closed work zone. Sidewalks along the closed section of Preble Street Extension will remain open to pedestrians. The Back Cove trail parking lot and access to Hannaford will remain open along Preble Street, but not be accessible from Marginal Way.
