Mayor Strimling Joins 'Climate Mayors' Network to Uphold Paris Agreement

news alert

Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling joined the “Climate Mayors” network in support of the Paris Agreement in Portland. To help bring further awareness to this effort, City Hall will be lit green this week and Mayor Strimling is working with Councilors to sponsor a resolve in support of the Paris Agreement for the full Council to act on at the Council’s June 19th meeting.

“Our city has joined Climate Mayors to mutually strengthen grassroots-level, city-led activity on undertaking climate action,” said Mayor Ethan Strimling. “Here in Portland, we’ve already undertaken, or are in the process of working toward, a number of sustainability efforts to ensure that our city has a climate-compatible future. I talked about our city using clean energy by 2040 in this year’s State of the City Address, and I’m proud that the Council’s Sustainability and Transportation Committee is currently working on updating our Municipal Climate Action Plan so we can work toward achieving that goal.”

Climate Mayors is formally known as the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda and is a network of more than 200 U.S. mayors representing more than 50 million Americans in red and blue states who are working together to strengthen local efforts for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting efforts for binding federal and global-level policy making. The network is led by Mayor Garcetti of Los Angeles and operationally run by the Chief Sustainability Officer for LA, Matt Petersen and his Deputy, Lauren Faber.

Climate Mayors recently released an open letter to President Trump to oppose his actions thus far against climate action. In January, 30 Climate Mayors issued an electric vehicle (EV) request for information (RFI) to show automakers and manufacturers that 114,000 of their cities’ cars and trucks could be electrified.
