The 2017 cruise season officially begins this Sunday with the arrival of the first large ship of the season, the Grandeur of the Seas, with 2,000 passengers and almost 800 crew. Portland welcomed six other small ships in May and two others are scheduled to arrive on June 2 and June 4.
Portland continues to see growth in the industry with 103 ship visits expected this year, the largest number of ships the city has ever hosted. The 2016 season saw the arrival of 77 ships and more than 100,000 passengers between May and October. This year, the season spans from May to November bringing more than 125,000 passengers and almost 50,000 crew members.
The cruise ship activity is in addition to The Cat, which will ferry visitors daily between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
