Moody - Wilson - Beckett Sewer Separation Project to Begin in December

Re: Moody – Wilson – Beckett Sewer Separation Project November 8, 2016
RE: Start of construction project.

The Portland Department of Public Works would like to inform you that the Moody-Wilson Sewer separation and Beckett Street Sewer Replacement project will be starting construction at the beginning of December. The project is scheduled to reach substantial completion by mid-June 2017.

The attached map will assist in defining the project boundaries. This project is being completed to help the City with their efforts to prevent Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) into Casco Bay.

You will start to notice utility markings along both Moody and Wilson Street providing locations for utilities within the street. You will also notice stakes in the green space area between the Eastern Promenade road and the residences located on the eastern promenade. As part of the sewer separation project a below ground storage unit will be placed in this green area between Wilson Street and Moody Street and for a short length between Moody Street and Congress street. The stakes represent the excavation area that will be required to install the underground tanks. During this excavation the city has identified 6 trees that will be taken down. The city’s engineer has worked with the city arborist Jeff Tarling to determine the proper course of action for the tree removal. Once the tank construction has been completed, the area will be completely restored with grass and new trees which will be planted in the same locations to replace trees that were taken down during construction.

This project will separate the existing combined sewer in the street to a separate sanitary sewer and stormwater drain. The sanitary sewage will head to the wastewater treatment plant while the stormwater will tie into the existing storm drain that discharges into Casco Bay. During the project, construction equipment and materials will be stored in the city’s street right of way. Various portions of road will be closed at certain times and allow for local traffic only as the contractor installs the new infrastructure. There will also be various restrictions of on street parking as construction moves along. We apologize for any inconvenience this work may cause but we will work hard with the contractor to make sure the project impacts are as limited as possible.

If you have any immediate questions, please feel free to contact Brad Roland or Justin Pellerin at 874-8828.
