Apply for Certificate of Appropriateness

Property owners wishing to request approval for work must submit an Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness. To submit materials and application electronically, please email Planning@portlandmaine.gov with the attached documents. After your electronic submission is received, and an invoice will be emailed to you which must be paid prior to your application being processed. Or, printed documents can also be mailed to the Planning Division located on the 4th Floor, City Hall, or dropped off in-person. The application fee must be paid before the application can be processed. Please reference the fee schedule included on the application for other applicable costs that may be associated with Board review.

Application Requirements


The application should include a detailed description of the project, photographs of the property, plans and elevation drawings, and product specifications. Many minor alterations may be reviewed and approved by staff in short order. More significant alterations are reviewed by the City’s Historic Preservation Board, which meets twice a month and is made up of Portland residents with expertise in historic buildings and construction.
