Ice skating at Deering Oaks is a true Portland experience. Strapping on your skates across from the Castle on a cold winter night, with Pandora's lights reflecting over the ice is an experience not to be missed. Little-known fact: Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington once skated on the Deering Oaks Pond during the filming of "The Preacher's Wife". The Parks, Recreation and Facilities crews work to keep the pond clear of snow and groomed for skating throughout the winter. Conditions can be variable though because Deering Oaks Pond basically serves as a stormwater basin that rises and falls with winter rainfall and melt-off, making ice grooming challenging. When it's good, it's good though, so keep your eye on the winter conditions map below and have fun out there!
